How to rank in Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is the conversational interface inside Google Search, distinct from AI Overviews. Ranking in AI Mode requires the same foundations as AI Overviews plus conversation-aware content structure that supports multi-turn refinement.
Google AI Mode is the conversational interface that appears inside Google Search when a user clicks the "AI Mode" tab or asks a follow-up question. It is distinct from AI Overviews (which appears at the top of the standard SERP). Both are powered by Gemini, but the citation patterns differ because AI Mode supports multi-turn conversation while Overviews is single-turn.
1. Satisfy all AI Overviews requirements
Everything that makes a site eligible for AI Overviews citation also makes it eligible for AI Mode. Top 10 organic rank, Google-Extended allowed in robots.txt, complete Schema.org structured data, E-E-A-T trust signals, answer paragraph format. Start there.
2. Add FAQPage and HowTo schema
AI Mode users typically ask follow-up questions. A site that ships FAQPage schema with Question/Answer pairs gives the model ready-made follow-up content to quote. HowTo schema with HowToStep entries serves the "what comes next" follow-up pattern.
For a GLP-1 clinic, the FAQPage entries should answer: "How much does semaglutide cost?", "Who qualifies for GLP-1 treatment?", "What is the side effect profile?", "How long does it take to see results?", "Is the cost covered by insurance?". Each Q/A pair is quotable in isolation by the model in response to a follow-up question.
3. Semantically chunk your content
Each H2 section on a page should be self-contained: a complete sub-answer to a sub-question. This lets AI Mode quote the relevant chunk without needing surrounding context. Avoid sections that depend on having read earlier sections.
4. Add speakable schema
Speakable selectors point AI Mode to the parts of the page suitable for voice synthesis. The Answer Capsule and TLDR are typical speakable targets. As voice-driven AI Mode queries grow, speakable schema becomes a differentiator.
5. Maintain conversational consistency
If a user asks about pricing and follows up with "what about for monthly?", the model should be able to find the monthly pricing on the same page or a tightly linked sibling page. Information architecture matters: pricing, eligibility, providers, and services should be one or two clicks from any entry point, with clean internal linking.
Timing expectation
AI Mode citations typically appear in the same window as AI Overviews (day 35 to 50 after launch) but with some queries citing faster because AI Mode draws from a broader candidate pool.
