The retrieval moment
A prospect in your city opens ChatGPT. They type a query like "best GLP-1 clinic in Austin" or "top personal injury law firm in Houston" or "luxury kitchen remodeler in Phoenix". The model runs a retrieval step against its index, ranks candidate sources by what it can extract from each, synthesizes an answer paragraph, and names two or three businesses by name. What the model is actually looking for
ChatGPT's retrieval layer evaluates candidate websites on roughly five dimensions when assembling a recommendation. None of them are the SEO signals you are used to.
- Extractability. Can the model get the answer paragraph it needs without executing JavaScript? Static HTML wins. React or Wix renders that require browser execution lose, because the crawler does not run them in the retrieval step.

- Recency. Does the site signal that the information is current? lastmod dates in the sitemap, updated timestamps in the schema, and recent edits to the underlying content all signal freshness.
- Corroboration. Do other sites on the public web confirm what this site claims? Reddit threads naming the business, directory listings with consistent NAP data, trade press mentions, and industry association membership all serve as third party validation.
Your competitor is cited because their website satisfies these five dimensions. Yours is not.
The three structural failures that cause invisibility

Failure one: JavaScript rendering
If a clinic site is built on Wix, Squarespace, or any modern React framework that renders content client-side, the AI crawler may see an empty page. The crawler fetches the HTML at the URL, finds a div tag waiting for JavaScript to populate it, and moves on. The content never enters the model's retrieval index. The site is not penalized — it is simply invisible.

Without it, the model has to guess. Most clinic sites either have no schema at all, or have generic schema (LocalBusiness only) that does not reflect the specialty.
A complete Schema.org @graph for a GLP-1 clinic includes MedicalClinic with @id, Physician entities for each provider with hasCredential references, Drug entities for semaglutide and tirzepatide, MedicalProcedure entities for each protocol, Service entities for membership tiers, Offer entities for pricing, and FAQPage with HowTo entities for eligibility and next steps. Every entity references every other entity through @id. The model can walk the graph and quote any fact.
Failure three: Answers buried under marketing copy
The model prefers websites where the answer is the first paragraph on the page. A clinic page that opens with "Welcome to our state of the art facility" fails. A clinic page that opens with "LeanCare Wellness is a GLP-1 weight loss clinic in Austin, Texas. The shape of a website that gets cited
Cited competitors share a consistent technical pattern, regardless of their vertical:
- Server side rendering or static generation. Astro, Next.js with SSG, plain HTML, or 11ty all qualify. Wix, Squarespace, and pure client-side React do not.
- Time to first byte under 400 milliseconds. The crawler will time out on slow servers.
- Complete Schema.org @graph as a single JSON-LD block in the page head, with @id references threading every entity together.
- Answer paragraphs as the first content on every page, written in fact-dense direct quotation format.
- llms.txt at the domain root, under 3,000 tokens, summarizing the business for language models.
- robots.txt explicitly allowing GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and Bingbot.
- 50 to 200 programmatic pages covering every city and service combination a prospect might query.
- Third party corroboration: at least 3 Reddit threads, 5 directory listings with consistent data, and 1 trade press mention naming the business.
If your site has 0 or 1 of these traits, you are structurally invisible. If your competitor has 5 or more, they are cited.
