How do you get recommended by ChatGPT?
To get recommended by ChatGPT, let OAI-SearchBot read your site, get named in the pages ChatGPT cites for your category, and keep your facts and prices identical everywhere they appear. Reviews in your customers' own words and honest, disclosed answers in communities help; schema, llms.txt, word count rules and date bumps do not. Measure on chatgpt.com with several runs per question, because the API cites different sources, which is how the KailxLabs $1,500 baseline works.
What does ChatGPT read first?
Since August 2026 ChatGPT reads more pages per answer and searches named brand sites directly. Your own pages now carry more weight, and so do their mistakes.
After a change on 8 Aug 2026, ChatGPT consulted 22.5 pages per answer, up from 11.6, and searches aimed at a single site went from 0.2% to 18% of its searches.

Five steps that hold up
Each step rests on platform documents or repeated public research, not on a single test.
- Be crawlable by OAI-SearchBot. It is the crawler behind ChatGPT search. Check robots.txt and your CDN: since 15 Sep 2026, Cloudflare's Block setting also stops Googlebot, Bingbot and Applebot. Which crawlers to allow.
- Be in the sources ChatGPT cites. Ask your buyer questions on chatgpt.com, list the pages it cites, and earn a fair place on them: third party comparisons, category lists, review sites and trade press.
- Keep your facts consistent. Price, services, hours, policies and product details should match on your site, your profiles and the sites that describe you. Pricing is the fact AI gets wrong most often.
- Collect reviews in your customers' own words. Ask every customer the same way, never script the wording and never offer an incentive. Yelp says asking for reviews can hurt a business there, so follow each site's rules.
- Take part in communities openly. Answer real questions from a named account on your own team, with your role disclosed. Never plant threads or pay for posts.

What does not move ChatGPT?
These tactics are still sold as levers. The evidence says otherwise.
| Tactic | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| Schema markup as a lever | Adding JSON LD produced no citation growth in ChatGPT or AI Mode in a matched study. Keep schema as hygiene.Ahrefs, difference in differences study · pages with 100+ AI Overview citations, 30 day window · 11 May 2026 · vendor data |
| llms.txt | Google says Search ignores llms.txt and other AI text files. No AI app has shown it changes answers.Google, AI optimization guide · updated 10 Jul 2026, checked 26 Sep 2026 |
| Chunking and word count rules | Google says chunking and rewriting for AI are not needed and there is no ideal length.Google, AI optimization guide · updated 10 Jul 2026 |
| Date bumps | Freshness comes from real updates. 75% of cited pages had been updated within a year; changing a date alone is not an update. Seer Interactive, content recency study · 7,683 dated pages, 47,097 citations, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, Mar to Jun 2026 · Jul 2026 · vendor data |
How do you know it worked?
Check on chatgpt.com, logged out and in a fresh chat, several times per question. Never trust the API as a stand in.
The ChatGPT API and the ChatGPT app shared only 12.0% of cited domains on the same questions.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
There is no fixed timeline, and anyone who quotes one is guessing. Fixes to your own pages count once ChatGPT reads them again; earning a place in the lists and reviews it cites is slower work. Measure the same questions before and after, so you know what moved.
Do ChatGPT ads help organic recommendations?
OpenAI says ads are labelled and separate from ChatGPT's answers, and there is no public evidence that buying ads earns organic mentions. Report paid and organic separately.
Should I post about my brand on Reddit?
Only as yourself, from a named account, with your role disclosed, answering real questions. Planted threads get flagged, and ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell sharply in August 2026 while Google's AI surfaces still cite it.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?
Nobody controls what an AI says. We never promise a fixed spot or a rank. KailxLabs local builds carry a refund guarantee tied to measured answers instead.
