Answer · ChatGPT plugins

Can ChatGPT recommend plugins automatically?

Yes. ChatGPT can suggest a plugin during a conversation, but OpenAI says only selected plugins get these suggestions and developers cannot request them. For every other published plugin, OpenAI documents two ways to be found: a direct link to the listing, or a search for the plugin by name. How often suggestions appear, and for which requests, is not published. KailxLabs is designing a study to count it.

The evidence

What does OpenAI say?

Each point carries the page it came from. Platform behaviour is described in OpenAI's own words where we can.

Suggestions exist

The Help Center tells users they can review a plugin suggested during a conversation, and that the options they see depend on their account and where they use ChatGPT.

Selected plugins only

OpenAI calls directory placement and proactive suggestions enhanced distribution. It says plugins that show strong utility in real use and high user satisfaction may be eligible, and that few plugins receive it at publication.

Improved at DevDay

On 29 Sep 2026 OpenAI said improved ranking and recommendations help people find relevant plugins in the directory and in conversations, on all plans.

Limits

What we do not know

  • OpenAI does not publish how a plugin is chosen for a suggestion, or what user satisfaction measures.
  • We have not yet counted how often suggestions appear. Until our study runs, any rate you read elsewhere is a guess or a single screenshot.
  • Whether memory, past chats, plan or region change the suggestions is not documented.

Nobody outside OpenAI knows the full recommendation method. We report what is documented, what we counted, and what is still unknown, and we keep the three apart.
