Does getting into the plugin directory guarantee traffic?
No. OpenAI says a published plugin is found through a direct link or a search for its name, and appears on the main pages of the directory only if OpenAI selects it. Publication makes a plugin available, not visible. People who already know the name can find it; people browsing shelves or describing a problem will not see it unless OpenAI grants enhanced distribution, which few plugins receive at publication.
Published is not promoted
Each point carries the page it came from. Platform behaviour is described in OpenAI's own words where we can.
OpenAI lists two ways: clicking a direct link to the listing, or "Searching for the plugin by name."
OpenAI, Developer docs, publish and review
Plugins appear on the main pages of the directory only if OpenAI selects them for enhanced distribution, and developers cannot request it.

When we read the directory logged out on 9 Oct 2026, its front page held 96 slots across 16 shelves, filled by 91 different listings.

In our nine query pilot, a category word returned listings with that word in their name or short description, and a longer phrase returned nothing.

What we do not know
- We do not know how many plugins the directory holds, so we cannot say what share reaches a shelf.
- The shelf count is one snapshot, logged out. Logged in users may see different shelves.
- OpenAI publishes no traffic or install figures for plugins.
Nobody outside OpenAI knows the full recommendation method. We report what is documented, what we counted, and what is still unknown, and we keep the three apart.
Sources and dates
Source date is the date on the source itself. Checked is the day we last read it.
