What changed for plugins at DevDay 2026?

At DevDay on 29 Sep 2026, OpenAI added plugin extensions, a new creation and submission flow, improved ranking and recommendations for plugins, support for MCP Events, and plugins inside Sites. Plugins and the shared directory existed before DevDay. What changed for discovery is one sentence in the recap: improved ranking and recommendations help people find relevant plugins in the directory and in conversations. OpenAI gave no detail on how.

The evidence

What OpenAI announced

Each point carries the page it came from. Platform behaviour is described in OpenAI's own words where we can.

Plugin extensions

A plugin can have a home in the ChatGPT sidebar, interactive panels beside the conversation, and viewers for its file types.

What did not change

The recap says nothing about ChatGPT search, shopping or ads. The rules on enhanced distribution sit in the developer docs and carry no date.

Limits

What we do not know

  • The recap describes the ranking change in one sentence, with no mechanism, signals or figures.
  • The recap says plugin extensions are available to all plans, while the developer docs say the web version for Free and Go is coming soon. We report both.

Nobody outside OpenAI knows the full recommendation method. We report what is documented, what we counted, and what is still unknown, and we keep the three apart.
