Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?
ChatGPT usually skips a business because it cannot read the site, because the pages it cites for that question do not name the business, or because the business's facts conflict across the web. For local businesses, ChatGPT's local answers now draw on Yelp ratings and reviews in relevant categories, so a thin Yelp profile costs you there. Check on chatgpt.com with several runs per question before you fix anything; the KailxLabs $1,500 baseline does this across up to six AI apps.
What are the common reasons?
Six causes explain most cases. Each one has a sign you can check and a fix.
| Reason | How to spot it | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| It cannot read your site | OAI-SearchBot is blocked in robots.txt, a firewall or a CDN setting, or your key facts only appear in images or scripts | Allow OAI-SearchBot, check the CDN, put prices and services in visible text |
| The sources it trusts do not name you | ChatGPT cites lists, reviews and comparisons in your category, and you are on none of them | Earn a fair place on the pages it already cites |
| Your facts conflict | Old prices, closed locations or discontinued products still live on your site or third party pages | Make one set of facts and correct it wherever AI reads it |
| Your local profile is thin | Few reviews, missing categories or wrong details on Yelp, Google and Apple | Complete each profile; ask every customer for an honest review, no incentives |
| Your pages do not say what you do | The service or product a buyer asks about has no page of its own | One clear page per service, product or location |
| It was one answer | You asked once, on one app, and got an answer that changes on the next run | Repeat the question several times before you act |

How should you check?
Most owners check once, on their own phone, and read too much into it. A proper check takes an hour.
- Write down ten questions a buyer would ask, such as "best family dentist in Austin" or "which CRM is best for a 20 person agency". Use their words, not yours.
- Ask each on chatgpt.com in a fresh chat, logged out, at least three times. Note every business named and every source linked.
- Count, do not screenshot. Named in 2 of 3 runs is a different answer from 0 of 3. One run proves nothing.
- Repeat on Google AI Mode and Perplexity. The apps disagree often, so a gap on one is not a gap on all.
- Open the sources. The pages ChatGPT cites tell you where the answer comes from and where you are missing.

What should you fix first?
Fix in this order. Each step is cheaper than the next and makes the next one count.

ChatGPT recommends my competitor. Why them?
Usually because the pages ChatGPT reads for that question name them: a list, a review site, a comparison, or their own clear service page. Look at the sources in the answer. That list is your to do list.
Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?
Not directly. Reverse engineering published by a tracking vendor on 4 Sep 2026 suggests ChatGPT runs its own search indexes alongside outside providers, so strong Google rankings do not guarantee a mention. Treat each AI app as its own channel.
Is it because I have not added schema?
Unlikely. A matched study found adding JSON LD produced no citation growth in ChatGPT, and Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. Fix access, sources and facts first.
Can KailxLabs tell me exactly why?
The $1,500 baseline shows who ChatGPT names instead of you, on which questions, and the sources behind each answer, measured over several runs on chatgpt.com and other AI apps. Nobody controls what an AI says. We never promise a fixed spot or a rank.
