A correctly written llms.txt includes five sections. Brand identity. Core facts stripped of marketing jargon. Exact service capabilities. Desired search intents (the queries the brand wants to be the answer for). External validation links (Crunchbase, LinkedIn, third party directories). The file should stay under 3,000 tokens to prevent truncation in AI context windows.
Adoption across AI engines is uneven but growing. Anthropic has published documentation referencing the standard. Perplexity has confirmed support. ChatGPT browsing reads it when present. The file costs nothing to ship and provides a controlled summary in the engine's hands.
