Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Also: GEO, generative engine optimisation
GEO is to AI search what classical SEO was to the ten blue links era. The term was coined in 2024 and saw widespread adoption through 2025 and 2026 as ChatGPT browsing, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews displaced a measurable share of traditional Google traffic.
GEO is not a replacement for SEO. The two disciplines overlap on technical foundations (server side rendering, Core Web Vitals, schema markup) but diverge on goal. SEO aims for rank in a list of results. GEO aims for citation inside a generated answer paragraph.
A clinic, law firm, or contractor that executes GEO correctly reaches first ChatGPT and Perplexity citations within fourteen to twenty one days of relaunch and full coverage across all four major AI engines within forty five days.
